From furniture to transportation, from social design to exhibition setups, including theoretical research and design studies by Italian design universities, on October 30th at the ADI Design Museum in Milan, the pre-selection opens the path toward the next Compasso d’Oro.

On October 30th, the ADI Design Museum in Milan will open an exhibition dedicated to design products selected for 2024 by the Permanent Observatory of ADI – the Association for Industrial Design. The exhibition will then be inaugurated in Rome at the WeGil Space on November 25.

This year’s selection includes 219 products, from furniture to transportation, social design to exhibition setups, along with 22 theoretical studies on design and 20 projects by students from Italian design universities, totaling 261 nominations. This is the first step towards the 2026 Compasso d’Oro, in which these products, along with those selected next year, may participate.

The selection provides a panoramic, first-hand snapshot of contemporary Italian design. It reveals an image of design that emphasizes not only the form of objects but also the critical role of design in every production chain. “Design enhances the rehabilitation of products and processes, revives traditional craftsmanship and high-level artisanal expertise, creates new players in the sector, and adds usability and appeal to highly industrial or technological solutions,” state Laura Badalucco, Makio Hasuike, Domenico Sturabotti, Laura Traldi, and Francesco Zurlo from the Scientific Committee of the ADI Permanent Design Observatory.

ADI promotes the quality of Italian design through the dissemination of objective criteria for evaluating products and services, developed over seventy years of experience and recently proposed to institutions for the drafting of the Made in Italy Law. These regulations for designers and manufacturers cover materials, design, packaging, and the form/function relationship—fundamental aspects of design conceived as a comprehensive approach to a product’s lifecycle. Luciano Galimberti details these principles in his introduction to this year’s ADI Design Index catalog.

“All these criteria,” writes ADI President, “compose the measure of the promise of quality that design makes to society: a promise that implies a concrete, honest approach in the daily operations of the industry, as well as in the work of designers, the distribution system, communication, and training.”
